Mary Jane Perkins was born in early 1863 to William Horace Perkins and Isabella Sarah James. Mary Jane, her mother and four brothers migrated from Warwickshire, England to the United States aboard the ship Malta, arriving 28 Apr 1871 in Boston, Massachusetts, before settling in Henderson, Kentucky.

Several years later, one of Mary’s brothers moved to St. Louis and Mary soon followed. Mary Jane Perkins married Ulysses W. Unger June 5, 1888 in St. Louis, Missouri.

The newly wed young couple had a daughter born April 27, 1889 named Edith B Unger. Two years after the birth of their daughter, Mary’s husband, Ulysses W. Unger, left (or the couple divorced).
In 1892, Ulysses Unger married Ida Ann Robison and together, Ulysses and Ida had seven children (half siblings of Edith B. Unger).
Alone, without a spouse to support her, Mary found work as a servant for a private family. Her daughter, Edith B. Unger, was living at the Methodist Orphan Home in St. Louis in 1900. Mary Jane Unger’s Marital Status indicates she was divorced on the 1900 Census. In the 1914 and 1917 city directories, Mary Jane Unger indicated she was the widow of Ulysses W. Unger.
While records documenting dates, places and relationships are scarce, I appreciate the benefit of DNA testing which show Ulysses W. Unger and Mary Jane Perkins are our 2nd Great Grandparents.
